I don't normally post change log type posts, but recent changes deserve a bit of bragging on my part. My blog index page now has the following features:
Improvements to filtering and searching
- Cleaned up my tags to just overall topics (max 3 or 4 each)
- You can now browse by topic using a drop-down menu
- Search now searches the whole table not just tags. (Still not searching the full text of the posts... give it time...)
- The Default view is filtered to the last 6 months so it doesn't get too long over time
- "Author's faves" section so you can read the posts I'm most proud of
BOOLEAN operators!!! (because what librarian abides a search bar without them)
Use AND, OR, NOT between keywords to do boolean searching! Here are some fun example searches to try:
- media OR technology
- politics NOT abbott
- technology AND personal
Suffice to say, I'm pretty happy with how powerful my search and filter options are now.
Other tweaks
- Changed the main font from Verdana to Georgia. Verdana is more fun but I felt that for long blog posts, readability was more important. So now you can pretend you're reading a Substack blog without being on substack :)
- Added a cool links page. There's not much there yet. If you know of a cool link, let me know!
As always
- Accessibility and simplicity are my design values
- Personal websites > platforms
- "Under construction" is a state of mind
Discuss on Bluesky
I've been tinkering with my dumb blog, and it's now:
* better than EBSCOhost (awesome filtering and powerful BOOLEAN search!)
* better than Substack (I, too, can type in Georgia with 1.5 line spacing. Nazis not included)
